Stating that ‘Kuwait already has an excessive number of churches compared to the country’s Christian minority,’ a member of parliament has called for a ban on the construction of new churches in the Middle Eastern nation. A group of legislators is also calling for a constitutional amendment that would make Sharia the basis of the legal system. 85% of the nation’s 2.6 million people are Muslim; 12%, most of them foreign workers, are Catholic. Fifteen priests in three parishes minister to the nation’s 300,000 Catholics.

Pray: the Christian presence in Kuwait would continue and may all who are commissioned by the Lord to share His truth in Kuwait be protected. (Ps.2:8)

Laos: Church closures

On February 21 a group of officials travelled to Kengweng village and conducted a seminar entitled ‘Tricks of the Enemy.’ Officials and villagers of Kengweng were asked to join the seminar. At the end of the seminar on February 22 officials summarized the teaching sessions and ordered the confiscation of Kengweng church building and prohibited Christians from using it, which went into effect immediately. The officials banned Christians from any worship gathering anywhere in the village. Any future worship gathering must be approved by authorities. The confiscation of Kengweng church took place in less than two months after officials confiscated Nadaeng church in the same district. The church began in 1972 with two Christian Lao families. In 1975 Christians constructed the building and have used it for worship ever since. The village has 25 Christian families, consisting of 178 individual believers.

Pray: God’s protection for the thirty churches throughout Savannakhet province, pray also for religious freedom to continue to flourish according to the Lao constitution. (Ps.27:4)

Syria: Christians prepare for the worst

Carl Moller at Open Doors writes, ‘Fundamental Islamic groups have orchestrated violent protests against the Syrian government. This could result in a new regime even worse than the present brutal one President Assad. If a change of power occurs- the revenge of the Sunnis could be bloodier than the 8,300+ deaths that have occurred. Christians in dozens of countries around the world face similar complex dilemmas where they cannot count on governments to protect them. But they can count on the prayers of the church and the power of God through His Word to see them through whatever battles are coming. Leah in Syria said, ‘Before I didn't see the importance of prayer, then I began to see how the people of God are coming together in fasting and prayers and understand what it means to be the body of Christ. My faith is stronger because I am not alone.’

Pray: for Leah and millions like her who ask us to pray for their safety and courage. (Ps.31:2)

In Islam forgiveness follows restitution. Apologizing admits responsibility. Muslims don't accept American style apologies. In Western culture refusing a sincere apology is poor form. In Sharia justice flows from balance (good deeds outweighing bad deeds). Muslims and Judeo-Christians have different rules for reconciliation. Americans cannot successfully import western rules into Muslim situations. Reconciliation among Muslims does not involve taking responsibility and then apologizing, it involves blaming either circumstances or God and then asking for forgiveness. Last week Qur'ans were burnt because detainees 'desecrated' them by writing messages to each other in them. Somehow American generals need to say, 'This is not our fault. Some detainees were desecrating Qur'ans, and it is God's will that they have now been exposed in this way. Please forgive us.'

Pray: for God to give leaders wisdom and understanding of each others religious values and for extremist views or actions to cease. (Pr.2:6)

Senior al-Qaeda operative, Saif al-Adel, who is believed to have led al-Qaeda after Osama bin Laden's death was detained on Wednesday after arriving from Pakistan. He is on the FBI's most-wanted list with a $5m reward for his capture. The FBI said, ‘al-Adel is thought to be affiliated with the Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ), and is believed to be a high-ranking member of the al-Qaeda organisation’.

Pray: that this may be the beginning of many prayers being answered for justice and future peace in the region. (Ps.7:14-17)

14-year-old Sarah appeared before Maryland’s legislature last month urging lawmakers not to redefine marriage, asking a committee to vote 'no' on gay marriage. After her testimony appeared online she was subjected to attacks, threats of violence and death wishes. Sarah said, ‘I really feel bad for the kids who have two parents of the same gender. Even though some kids think it’s fine they have no idea of the wonderful experiences they miss out on. I don’t want more kids confused about what’s right and okay. I don’t want to grow up in a world where marriage isn’t such a special thing anymore.’ In Britain Conservative MP David Burrowes revealed he had received a death threat because of his support for the traditional definition of marriage. He made the revelation at the launch last week of Coalition for Marriage, a new grassroots campaign group dedicated to preserving the traditional definition of marriage.

Pray: for God to protect and encourage all who take a public stand in the support of traditional Christian values in the USA and elsewhere. (Ps.32:8)

Iran :Pastor Yousof update

Reuters reported, ‘Iran has put off the execution of Christian Pastor Yousof Nadarkhani’ (Praise God!) Probably in response to massive international pressure. It is not clear how long his reprieve is. Pastor Yousof was due to be executed on Tuesday after loosing the final appeal against a conviction for apostasy in Iran's Supreme Court. The 33-year-old pastor converted to Christianity from Islam at the age of 19. In 2009 he filed a complaint over Islamic indoctrination of his children at school, saying his children should not be forced to learn a religion they do not practice. He was arrested shortly afterwards and convicted of apostasy. The pastor, a member of the Protestant Evangelical Church of Iran, was given a chance to recant but refused. Punishment for an Innate Apostate is death. Punishment for a Parental Apostate is death.

Pray: for Pastor Yousof’s release, for his family to know your protection and for all those involved to know God's power and provision. (Ps.9:9,19)

‘Good news! That's what it is. From all over Africa we are beginning to hear stories of renewal, revival and transformation. Watch closely, listen carefully, because these stories are coming from every corner of the continent. The youth of Africa is spreading the word. A new generation is ready to stand in the gap and pay the price. Ready to enter the ‘powerhouse of prayer'.’ Alfred Gcilitshana is clearly excited when he shared about the prayer movement that is stirring young people in Africa. They meet in so-called 'powerhouses of prayer', places dedicated to seeking God in various creative ways. ‘We come to the powerhouse because we are very excited about Jesus and passionate about prayer,’ he says. ‘We want to pray until we see God being glorified all over the world by all cultures. In the powerhouse we can express ourselves in many different ways in prayer.

Praise: God for the exciting news of young people gathering in prayer across Africa. (2Sa.7:27)

In less than one week, the national petition for marriage has gathered more than 64,000 signatures. That number only includes those who have signed up online. In addition, people across the nation are signing paper petitions and posting them in. The Coalition for Marriage produced half-a-million paper petition forms for distribution throughout the UK. Reacting to news the online petition passed the 64,000 mark, campaign director Colin Hart said: ‘In just our first week, 64,000 people have signed the campaign’s petition. They are from all walks of life, religious and non religious, but they all share one thing, a belief that the Government should not redefine the current definition of marriage, which has been the bedrock of society for thousands of years’.

Praise: God for the response to this petition and pray that numbers will continue to increase. (Ro.8:31)
