Prayer Hub News

On June 13th the NY Times reported, ‘Protests by an increasingly forceful movement against increases in bus fares shook Brazil’s two largest cities on Thursday night, the fourth time in a week that activists have taken to the streets in demonstrations that have been marked by clashes with security forces.’ Since then the violence has steadily worsened to encompass more than 100,000 people sweeping through at least a dozen major cities on Monday night. Protesters are calling for better public services and an end to corruption. With organisers planning further protests the authorities appear to be uncertain what to do next. Police in some regions cracked down hard.

Pray: for President Dilma Rousseff to recognize what steps to take in addressing corruption, and ending the demonstrations peacefully. (Ps.17:19-20)

The Taliban set the stage for peace talks with envoys of President Hamid Kharzai and the US, establishing a venue and an opening to the Afghan leadership just hours after Kabul took over nationwide security responsibilities. US Taliban discussions in Qatar on Thursday follow the Taliban opening a political office on Tuesday in Doha and making a gesture toward renouncing links to international terrorism. Until now the Taliban have publicly refused to negotiate with Kabul's representatives, dismissing Mr. Kharzai as an American ‘puppet.’ On Tuesday the insurgent group said its representatives in Doha would meet Afghans ‘in due appropriate time.’ The Taliban announced the office opening (the result of lengthy behind-the-scenes negotiations involving the US, Pakistan, Mr. Kharzai and Qatar) shortly after the US-led coalition formally transferred the security lead to Afghan forces. The coalition will now shift to a support and advisory role.

Pray: for this important step toward reconciliation to move forward without cultural, constitutional, political or religious hindrances. Pray for an end to verbal and physical warfare. (Ac.2:40)

Canada: Government prayer Sunday

On 30th June Churches across Canada will enter into their 7th annual ‘Government Prayer Sunday’ and unite in intercession for their government, their Christian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and the provinces. A number of the provinces have become battlegrounds needing national and international prayer support. Manitoba has proposed anti-bullying legislation, Ontario has radical sex-education and Quebec has euthanasia legislation and the proposed Charter of Secularism. June is when the big ‘Pride’ marches occur in Vancouver and Toronto. We are asked to pray for the love of God to be revealed to the Gay/Lesbian community. May the Canadian Church respond with bold love while holding to the biblical position of sexuality. Pray also for First Peoples' Leaders to have wisdom, grace and protection. Pray also for the Church to have a garment of praise settle upon them and for new strength and anointing as they lift the name of Jesus over every region on the 30th.

Pray: For the Lord's presence in all government decisions, pray also for the Canadian Church to experience a fresh level of unity in prayer and declaration. (Ps.18:13-14)

Two recent incidents have left priests and seminary students severely beaten. On June 5th Muslim extremists went to Tumilia mission and attacked Fr. Abel when he came out of his room. Some say they went with the intention of robbing the property, however International Christian Concern confirm it was ‘targeted persecution by Muslims on Christians.’ On June 6th a Muslim man died from a heart attack during a conflict regarding trespassing by Muslims on Christian land to steal mangos. Blaming the Christians for the man's death, the Muslims attacked the entire village. Two villagers fled to the Catholic Church's mission compound. A Muslim mob of 100+ armed with weapons stormed the compound. The police arrested some Christians but did not take any action against the Muslims who were trespassing on Catholic land. The priests are afraid to do anything against the perpetrators. Muslim extremists are protected by the Muslim ruling party.

Pray: for the Bangladesh Christians living without security from the government, pray God’s protection over them. Pray for an end to attacks on religious minorities in Bangladesh. (Ps.102:28)

What is more attractive than men and women, boys and girls worshiping the Lord in humility – in the “beauty of holiness.” The Psalmist wrote: “O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker” (1Chr 16:29; 2 Chr 20:21; Ps 29:2; 95:6; 96:9; Is 45:23; Rom 14:11; Phil 2:10). On Sunday, June 30th, Americans young and old will fall on their knees in reverence for God, many, some for the first time in their lives!

Special thanks to each of you who have helped get the word out about Call2Fall Sunday, June 30, 2013. If you have not, I’m asking you to join us and hope to enlist your help through the attached letter. Visit www.Call2Fall.com for the full story.

On Sunday, June 30, just days from now, over 1 and 1/2 million believers across America will fall to their knees in their churches and homes to acknowledge our nation's dependence upon Almighty God. We will humble ourselves, repent, and ask Him to forgive our sins and intervene to save our nation, before it is too late.

About 20 years ago, the world had about 1.1 billion Muslims. Islam was a little known religion in most Western nations, and efforts on the part of the Church to share their Christian faith with Muslims were scarce. Today, that number is estimated at 2.1 billion. Endeavors to reach Muslims have increased ten-fold, and 30 Days of Prayer for the Muslim World is one of many tools that brings attention to the call to share the message of Jesus with them.

The Muslim world can be a challenge to Christians–especially since 9/11. Theological arguments or political manipulation may not impact Muslims, but we know prayer will. The 30 Days of Prayer for the Muslim World encourages a greater understanding of how to participate in God’s purposes for the Muslim world.

This guide will help you join with others in asking God:

  • to reveal Himself in new ways to Muslim people
  • to support the work of Christians among the Muslim people they love
  • for greater breakthroughs for the Gospel among Muslims

It is not too late to join with millions of Christians around the world during the upcoming month of Ramadan, July 9 to August 7, 2013. The 30 Days Muslim Prayer Guide offers new information, statistics, stories and photographs from all over the Muslim world. Christians can follow and pray through the guide at the same time that Muslims fast and pray.

Check out a few sample pages and order this 56-page guide at www.waymakers.org/pray/30-days/#sample-pages. You can also check out a sample page of the special 32-page, fully illustrated “Just for Kids” edition, which includes fun activities.

For His glory,

Steve Hawthorne

P.S. Let’s pray throughout this time of Ramadan, that Muslims would experience God’s unconditional love for them and that they would encounter Jesus.

Apologies for the email blast, but just wanted you to be aware of (and participate in) World Refugee Sunday, June 16th or 23rd, 2013. This is an opportunity to pray for those forcibly displaced “people on the move” around the world, as well as raise awareness and explore possible ministry. There are approximately 50 million people in that category (according to the United Nations), but there are literally millions more unaccounted for.

Three ways you can be involved:

  • Participate!  Click this link (http://refugeehighway.net/resources/world-refugee-sunday) for many free resources (posters/flyers/bulletin inserts, prayer points, media presentations, etc.) available for individuals, churches, fellowships, small groups, etc.  The main poster is available in virtually all major languages (attached in English).  Though an entire service can be structure around the theme of refugees and the opportunity they offer us, even just spending a few minutes in prayer is a great connection to the global Christian community.  We are expecting hundreds of thousands around the world to participate in some way.
  • Check out and like the World Refugee Sunday Facebook page
  • https://www.facebook.com/worldrefugeesunday).
  • Share this information with those in your networks, by forwarding this email or inviting them to the Facebook page.

See this press release (http://www.worldea.org/news/4229/wea-calls-upon-churches-around-the-world-to-observe-world-refugee-sunday-on-june-16-and-23-2013) for even more information. I would be more than happy to interact with you about theis. Thanks for listening – and caring for those most vulnerable in our world.

An online giving charity set up by the Archbishop of York in 2010 has responded to its 2,000th request for help. Acts435.org.uk connects those in need with those who can help, while protecting donor anonymity and applicant confidentiality. Donors around the country are giving on average £7,000 a month through the platform, more than triple the level of donations this time last year. Since its launch, Acts435 has provided over £175,000 in donations to people needing help with things like school uniforms, furniture, food and debt relief orders. The charity says many of the applicants are people struggling to cope after a relationship breakdown, redundancy or a change to their benefits. ‘As the country goes through tough economic times, many people are struggling to cope with unexpected expenses and even everyday ones. Acts 435 is bringing real hope for these situations.’

Praise: God for the success of Acts435.
